The Paul Pirates Esports program is off to a strong start, with wins across Smash Bros., Chess, and Brawlhalla.
🏆 Smash Bros. Is 2-0 and Ranked #1
Our Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate team is 2-0 and sits at #1 in the PlayVS Washington, D.C. DCSAA standings (as of October 5), undefeated at 6-0 in games. On Wednesday, September 30, Paul Public Charter School (A) swept the DPA Pythons Senior Smash team 3-0 in a best-of-5 series.
The win was powered by resilience. Antonio Garcia came back from a setback to win his match, then came back again to win the tiebreaker, leaving the door open for Jai'lon Ware to close out the series. The win also moves Captain Eric Maldonado's record to 4-0 in match play.
⭐ Player of the Week: Antonio Garcia
PlayVS named Antonio Garcia Player of the Week (Sep 26-Oct 3, 2026). Antonio stayed positive, didn't let one loss get him tilted, and delivered when the team needed him most. That mindset is exactly what we want from Pirates competitors.
♟️ Chess: Preston Legacy Team Is 3-0
On Monday, October 5, Freshman Walter Guardado, playing the top spot for the Preston Legacy Team, earned another win with a 2-1 victory over Sheehan Titans. The team is now 3-0. Walter's continued success is helping establish a strong new generation of competitive chess at Paul.
Edgardo Reyes also picked up a 2-1 win over Orangewood Christian in his match.
Our competitive freshman chess group has grown to three players:
- Eric Wilson
- Walter Guardado
- Edgardo Reyes
It is exciting to see our freshmen stepping into competitive play and carrying forward the legacy of the Paul Chess Club.
🔥 Brawlhalla Opens With Two Wins
Brawlhalla's PlayVS Eastern Regional season opened on Monday, October 5, with two wins: a 3-2 victory over Global Impact Academy and a 3-0 win over East Jackson. Junior Ezekiel Dawkins took home his first win of the season in his first official match.
